Johannesburg, South Africa — The world’s largest retailer, Walmart, has announced plans to open its first branded stores in South Africa during the final quarter of 2025, marking a significant expansion of its global footprint.
With over 10,750 stores across 19 countries and a staggering R11.9 trillion in revenue for its 2025 fiscal year, Walmart’s entry into the South African retail landscape is poised to reshape the sector. The move follows the company’s inaugural Africa Growth Summit held in April, where Walmart engaged suppliers from 12 African nations, focusing on small and medium-sized enterprises.
A Strategic Expansion
According to Kath McLay, President and CEO of Walmart International, the new stores will offer a broad selection of merchandise—including fresh groceries, household essentials, apparel, and technology—with a strong emphasis on locally sourced products.
“Our stores will be designed with South African customers in mind,” McLay said. “Expect bright lighting, wide aisles, and access to global brands—all tailored to deliver a world-class shopping experience.”
Walmart South Africa also plans to integrate digital channels, enhancing convenience and accessibility for consumers across the country.
Building on Existing Foundations
While this marks the debut of Walmart-branded stores in South Africa, the company is no stranger to the region. Walmart acquired a 51% stake in Massmart in 2010 and completed its full acquisition in 2022, delisting the group from the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. Massmart operates well-known South African brands such as Game, Makro, and Builder’s.
“We’re thrilled to begin this journey introducing the iconic Walmart brand to South African associates, customers, and communities,” said Miles van Rensburg, CEO of Massmart. “By listening and working together, we aim to build lasting relationships and deliver a delightful shopping experience that reflects the needs and aspirations of South Africans.”
What’s Next
The first Walmart stores are expected to open in Q4 2025, with official launch dates to be announced by the end of October. Industry analysts anticipate that Walmart’s entry could intensify competition in the retail sector, drive innovation, and create new opportunities for local suppliers.
